Driver was speeding in Johor bus crash that killed 14, say cops
MUAR: Police have confirmed that the express bus, which skidded off near Kampung Jayor here and killing 14 people, was travelling at a high speed during the incident.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Azman Ayob said that the Alisan Golden Coach bus was travelling from JB sentral to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) Kuala Lumpur.
The bus driver had lost control of the vehicle before plunging off a 10m cliff at KM137.2 of the North-South expressway, he said.
"The bus rammed into a concrete tunnel at the cliff," he reporters during a press conference held at Muar District Police Headquarters here on Saturday.
The accident killed 13 people at the scene while another victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital (HPSF) in Muar.
The dead included six men, eight women and a child. Their bodies have been sent to HPSF for post-mortem.
The other 16 passengers suffered minor and severe injuries and all of the victims were sent to HPSF for treatment.
ACP Azman added that the police have yet to identify the identities of the victims and yet to contact the express bus company.
He said the injured victims were identified as seven local men, five Singaporean men, two Myanmar men, a Singaporean woman and a woman whose identity has yet to be identified as she is still receiving treatment as at press time.
Meanwhile, Land Public Transport Commission ( SPAD), PLUSRonda and Propel Projek Penyelenggaraan Lebuhraya Bhd (Propel) personnel were busy cleaning up at the scene of the accident.
A crane was on site to hoist the wreckage, which saw several seats being ripped off due to the impact, from the underpass.
Traffic was slow along the stretch as motorists slowed down their vehicles to catch a glimpse of the crash site.
